At the beginning of part one, R. J. Palacio chose to include some of the lyrics from Natalie Merchant's song "Wonder" click on the image below and listen to the song.
After listening to the song, think about why the author chose to begin the book with lyrics from this song. After reading up to page 33, stop and reflect on what you've learned about Auggie so far. Leave a comment below sharing your ideas about why you think R. J. Palacio titled the book Wonder. Be sure to return to this post and read other's comments, then you can respond to their thinking.

Welcome to Westmere Book Club 2015
Hello! We are very excited to host our very own book club. The purpose of this club is to develop a stronger reading community with our students and their families. It is our belief that when parents and children read together, the level of enjoyment, engagement and comprehension increases. Conversations naturally occur around a shared story. We are going to start with reading Wonder by R. J. Palacio!
Wonder is an amazing story about August (Auggie) Pullman who was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to a mainstream school—until now. He's about to start 5th grade at Beecher Prep, and if you've ever been the new kid then you know how hard that can be. The thing is Auggie's just an ordinary kid, with an extraordinary face. But can he convince his new classmates that he's just like them, despite appearances? This incredible story will be a fantastic way to start our book club because long after you've read it, you'll still be thinking about Auggie.
